Dutton School students on a train trip to Pettigrew, Madison County, Arkansas, 1937

Dutton school kids on a train ride to Pettigrew, January 4, 1937. Teacher Mildred Wist Ratliff (back row, wearing hat) gathers up her students at Dutton School (Madison County) for a train ride to nearby Pettigrew, the end of the line on the St. Paul Branch of the Frisco Railroad.

Perhaps Mrs. Ratliff knew the demise of the St. Paul Branch was imminent: the railroad from Fayette Junction (on the south side of Fayetteville) to Pettigrew (south Madison County) was abandoned and the tracks removed just a few months after this photo was taken.

Front row, from left: Billie Jean Dutton, Imalee Smith, Bobby Wist, Marie Smith, Vernon Dutton. Middle row, from left: Rufus Smith, Jack Wist, Joe Wist, Geraldine Wheeler, Bonnie Smith, Keith Wist, H. R. Wist, Beryl Wheeler. Back row, from left: Mildred Wist Ratliff, Sylvia Smith, Gayle Wist, James Wist, Everett Dutton, Carroll Smith.
