Buffalo River clean-up, 1972

Two members of the Ozark Society catch their limit in old tires during a clean-up of the Buffalo River in 1967, the year Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt and Senators J. William Fulbright and John McClellan introduced the first legislation to create the Buffalo National River. In February 1972, Congress voted to establish the Buffalo as the nation's first national river. Flowing from west to east through Newton, Searcy, Marion, and Baxter counties, 135 miles of the 150-mile river is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service.
