Robert Barnes at the Prairie Grove Clothesline Fair, 1950s. Artist Robert Barnes was a founder of the Council of Ozarks Artists and Craftsmen, the originator of the Prairie Grove Clothesline Fair. The fair, held on Labor Day weekend at the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, celebrates its 60th year in 2011.
Born in 1883 in Illinois, Barnes began his art career as a window-dresser in Cleveland, Ohio. He later became a professional artist and photographer, and was curator of photography at the Milwaukee Museum for 17 years. He retired to the Ozarks in 1948, settling in the Washington County community of Greenland. Barnes taught art and weaving classes to hundreds of children and adults in Northwest Arkansas until a broken hip in 1982 forced him into retirement at the age of 97. Robert Barnes died in 1984, and is buried at Baptist Ford Cemetery in Greenland. Ernie Deane Collection
