Cartmell Outhouse

The Cartmell Outhouse was built in the 1930s by William Cartmell on the family farm near Brentwood (Washington County). Outhouses commonly had ventilation holes shaped like a half moon. Folklore says the shape of a half moon was carved on the outhouse door to signify "Women" and a star for "Men." The Cartmell Outhouse has both a moon and a star. It also has two seats--a big one for big people, a little one for little people!
